The Godfrey Barnsley papers, dating from 1822 to 1980 but falling mostly in the period 1826-1873, include correspondence, financial records, legal and estate papers, writings, photographs, and collected materials that document the business career and family life of a Savannah cotton merchant. Correspondence (1826-1955), writings (1868-1915), financial and legal records (1829-1954), photos, and other papers document the cotton economy in the pre-Civil War South, Barnsley's business affairs as cotton factor and merchant in Savannah, Ga., and New Orleans, La., business negotiations with British merchants, his plantation in northern Georgia, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Confederate expatriates in Brazil.
